About me

I was born in Nottingham in 1974, to parents who refused to let their lust for life be curbed by a bawling infant. When I was fourteen weeks old they put me in the back of their Mini van and drove to Finland. Apparently I spent a night on the ferry being cooed over by a quartet of Scandinavian lovelies.

I wish I remembered that.

When I was still a toddler we moved to Johannesburg for two years and stayed for sixteen. My parents fell in love with the sunshine, the wine and the entrepreneurial spirit. Somehow they navigated their burgeoning software business through the minefield of political and racial turmoil that was South Africa in the 1980s while giving my younger brother and I a (mostly) wonderful childhood. Respect.

Since I returned to the UK in the early '90s I've turned my hand to a variety of jobs from bit part actor to screenwriter to web designer to - most recently - digital media writer and editor. I spent seven happy years working for the University of Southampton.

When I'm not writing or reading I'm often to be found up a mountain or on a racetrack. Depending on the day I either love or hate skiing, and my heart belongs in the Scottish Highlands. I live and breathe motorsport; though I sadly lack the gifts of a Hamilton or a Vettel, I am a competent kart racer and race in championships and endurance events around the UK.

I live in Hampshire with my wife Marianne and a largeish collection of wine. Or wine bottles, depending on the mood of the household.
